Eames Lounge: The Chair Obession

My husband loves all things modern. I like to say that if we were magazines, he would be Dwell and I would be Elle Décor.  Somehow we seem to meet in the middle, and his George Jetson sensibilities are tempered by my love of Kelly Wearstler brass hand sculptures. (Or is it the other way around?) Since about 2001 I've been longing to surprise him with the buttery soft leather of an Eames Lounge Chair, but the price tag has always been daunting, and in Hawaii you just don't find this sort of thing on ebay. The other day my jaw quite literally dropped when I saw a Craig's List post for none other than his beloved Eames, ottoman and all. The asking price: $30!  After over a decade of swooning over catalogs and design books, I was determined to be the first on the scene, only to find an elderly couple testing out "my hubby's" chair.  My heart raced until she finally, slowly shook her white tresses, saying, "No, it's not for me."  You might be relieved to know that I resisted the urge to do a celebratory endzone dance (just barely). My husband and I shook our heads in wonder for a few days, admiring our score with the biggest grins on our faces. Sometimes good things really do come to those who obsess.  xo  —signature
